What Does an OT Assessment Look Like?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Assessments are adapted to each child or young person's age, interests, needs and capacity.
01
Getting to Know You
We start by understanding strengths, interests, everyday experiences and what's important to the child or young person and their family.
02
The Assessment
Depending on the assessment, we may explore sensory processing, regulation, motor coordination, visual-motor skills and everyday activities through observation, discussion and standardised assessment.
03
Understanding & Next Steps
We bring together assessment findings, the young person's experiences and family perspectives to provide a written report with practical, individualised recommendations.
Assessments are collaborative and flexible. Whether a young person communicates through movement, play, conversation or other forms of communication, their autonomy, regulation and capacity remain central throughout.
NOT SURE WHICH ASSESSMENT TO CHOOSE?
You do not need to know exactly what service your child needs before contacting me.
As a simple guide:
Choose a Child-Led Sensory Assessment if the main questions are around sensory processing, regulation and participation, or your child may not currently manage formal standardised assessment.
Choose a Comprehensive OT Assessment if there are specific questions around motor coordination, Dyspraxia/DCD, handwriting, dysgraphia or visual motor skills.
Choose a School Observation if the main difficulties are happening within school and understanding the school environment is important.
Choose a Parent Consultation if you would like support and guidance without starting with an assessment.
Still unsure? Get in touch and I can help you identify an appropriate starting point.
